Mozilla Mombasa had organized the last event under the Maker Party Series, dubbed Shaping the Future the theme being “Creating a Free, Open and Secure Web for All” The community was privileged to have hosted well knowledgeable speakers in the field of Information Security to discuss all elements revolving round Information Security ranging from Cookie Management, Network Security and Mobile Internet Security amongst others.

Equity Mozilla Bootcamp

November 11^th was an awesome day for the Mozilla Mombasa. Mozilla Mombasa was invited for a two day boot camp in Nairobi, the leads Alifiya Ganijee and Said Fuad, accompanied by fellow Mozillians in the community; Jamal Mbarak, Bryan Opiyo, Festus Lang ‘at, Harris Mwashalo and Musa Alfan Mozillians from Mombasa were also invited to accompany the two. The event was organized by Mozilla & Equity Group foundation. It’s also important to note that prior to the invite was also the 10^th anniversary of Mozilla Firefox and what better way to celebrate with Mozilla, by attending the 2 day boot camp which involved in empowering others through the Digital Literacy, set to roll out late next year with a team of fellow Mozillians and other teams from Equity Group foundation. Just to break it down about the #DigitalLiteracy program.

2014 has been a fruitful year for Mozilla Mombasa conducting events centered around Web Maker and as the year comes to a close Mozilla Mombasa is about to end the Maker Party Series with much euphoria. Still under the Maker Party 2014 Series. Set to be hosted at The Lotus Hotel Mombasa from 9.00AM to 3.00PM on November 22nd as from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

The long Mashujaa weekend began and with it came a great opportunity for the MozCoffee meetup. Mozillian Shujaas, from various institutions in Mombasa, came together to discuss issues that involved improving the Mozilla Mombasa Community, as far as from JKUAT VOI and within Mombasa came to represent their various institutions, we also had the privilege of Mr.Abdulrahman lecturer from JKUAT Mombasa. So after a light banter and moments of acquaintance the meeting commenced.

Firefox OS Expo

The weekend was here and undoubtedly this was going to be the Firefox OS Apps Expo. With tickets sold out, the turnout as expected was really impressive. Techies/Students from various learning institutions, KEMU, MKU, TUM, KU and the very host themselves JKUAT Mombasa came in droves to attend the Expo. The expo hosted a panel of business people from Mombasa’s various reputable businesses; Coastal Image Technologies, Branding Concepts, Zevan Limited and Crablinks Interactive to engage with students & tech enthusiasts and share knowledge whilst reviewing some of the excellent applications from these students who had been working on building apps for the Firefox OS.

In keeping up with Maker Party 2014 series slogan “Teach Learn & Make”, Mozilla Mombasa proudly brings to you the Firefox OS Apps Expo that is to be held on Saturday, 27th September 2014 at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology Mombasa Campus from 8.00AM to 1.00PM. With the unveiling of Firefox Keon mobile phone last year by Mozilla, it has raised a need for Apps on the Marketplace, functionality driven apps that could run on the Firefox OS and also help users of the phone with their day to day activities.

Building for the future with Appmaker

Mozilla Mombasa held this event with an aim of introducing fellow tech enthusiasts to Mozilla Appmaker; a free, open source app authoring tool that lets you drag and drop individual components to build and share custom mobile apps right into your web browser. The event was held in the spacious on the 6^th floor the JKUAT Mombasa Campus. Participants started coming in early minutes before the event and settled.

Mash-Up the Web

So with the date set and people registering for the event, Mash-up the web was finally here! Despite experiencing some slight rains in the wake of the event this didn’t deter attendees from showing up to the event with some like Gilbert showing up at the exact time 8:00am sharp. It was very commendable and we hope this spirals down to the community members, punctuality is the soul of business. The venue was really outdone, kudos to the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology (JKUAT) fraternity for providing the space, facilities and for their valuable support of course without which this event would not have been possible.

On Saturday the 22^ndof March 2014, the Mozilla Mombasa community organized a meet-up dubbed “Coffee with MozMombasa” a meet up with Student Reps, Firefox Student Ambassadors, the Regional Marketing Ambassador and fellow Mozillians to reflect on the success of the Mozilla events that have been covered on the 1^st quarter of 2014 and the challenges that have been faced in carrying out some of events. Also in attendance was Alex Wafula, Mozilla Rep from Nairobi who also joined in to take into account challenges from the Mozilla Mombasa and see to it how we could all solve them.

On Saturday, 15th March 2014, WoMoz Mombasa, a sub-chapter within the Mozilla Mombasa community focused on Women and Mozilla organized its second event called Women's Webmaker Day under the theme: "Learn by making"

The event was packed by 42 attendants out of which 8 were boys which implies that 81% of the attendants were female! Congratulations to all the ladies who made it!

We started off by recapping the well-known programming languages used by today’s web developers. These being HTML, JavaScript, CSS for the front-end (Client-side languages) and PHP, Python and Node.js for the back-end (Server-side Languages).

Open Data Day Kenya 2014 - Mombasa

Open Data Day is a gathering of citizens in cities around the world to write applications, liberate data, create visualizations and publish analyses using open public data to show support for and encourage the adoption open data policies by the world's local, regional and national governments.

Open Data Day Kenya was organized by Open Institute. In Mombasa the event was done in partnership with The Mombasa Tech Community in Mombasa, Kenya.
