An event organized by GDG Mombasa
A Map Up event held at CAMARA courtesy of Google
The Google MapUp event kicked off at 8.30 am on Saturday morning at CAMARA Hub Mombasa, despite the chilly weather and downpour, we had about 35-40 people who actually made out of their comfortable beds to attend the event :)
The Google MapUp event is an event in which a group of people come together to improve the places they know and love on Google Maps by using Google Map Maker. The MapUp event also teaches new mappers how to use Google Map Maker, bringing together experienced mappers, and everything in between.
The event was aimed to show participants how to map different places, add categories and discuss other features. It enabled them become citizen cartographers and improve the quality of maps and local information. The event was focused to make particularly Mombasa better mapped place with relevant local information such as roads, schools, hospitals, banks, hotels, police stations and such other important places entered by users, having local knowledge.
The event started off with Said Fuad doing an Introduction to Google Map Maker, introducing what it is, the problems facing maps and so on, thereafter Musa Alfan took the attendants through a practical session of how to add, edit, moderate and delete places on Google Maps using Google Map Maker Tool. After that we had a question and answer session then Alifiyah Ganijee introduced the Mapathon and divided the attendants into groups where by each group was asked to map a particular category like:
The attendants were quite excited and were being assisted by Said Fuad, Alifiyah Ganijee and Musa Alfan on any difficulties encountered. However, due to the heavy rains, the internet connection got really down. We also had a session where by we shared and watched some videos on Google Map Maker, on how to add roads, buildings etc.
In a nutshell, the event was totally awesome and we hope to have map-ups quite often to ensure that Mombasa and Kenya at large is better mapped on Google Maps.
