A HTML5 Hackathon held on 22nd June 2013 courtesy of Mozilla
We are very pleased to inform you that Mozilla Mombasa hosted the HTML5 Hackathon at the Jomo Kenyatta Univeristy of Agriculture and Technology Mombasa Campus.
Out of the 30 people who had registered for the event, we had 26 people who were present for the event, most of them were quite early and very eager for the event to get started.
Among the four presentations, Alifiyah Ganijee kicked off the event with an introduction to Mozilla, what it is and what it does, she mentioned some of the projects of Mozilla and ways in which one can contribute, Said Fuad then took over and talked about HTML5, what it is, the new features in HTML5 and then talked about the various HTML5 mobile application frameworks highlighting PhoneGap, Sencha, Mobello amongst others. He then showed a demo application that he built using PhoneGap and explained how to get started. Attendants asked questions after which Musa Alfan introduced Mozilla Tools, specifically Popcorn Maker, he clearly explained what Popcorn Maker is all about and also did a short demo, Zahra Jalalkhan then took over and did a presentation on Mozilla Thimble, she showed a video to the attendants about Mozilla Thimble and also explained in depth how to start using Mozilla Thimble.
Thereafter, we had a break session where by we provided participants food and drinks, as people were munching, we passed the Geeks Keon Phone around and asked attendants to use and feel the developer preview phone and to provide feedback on it, Lastly, Andrew Mwangi took over and presented X-Ray goggles and its application, he took the attendants through a live session of installing x-ray goggles and using ways of using it.
We then had a question and answer session and finally Alifiyah Ganijee and Said Fuad gave out closing remarks and brought the event to an end by encouraging attendants to share with their friends what they learnt as well as applying the knowledge gained on how to use various tools introduced and to make something useful out of it.
Finally, we gave out some cool T-shirts and also gave out some eye-catchy stickers to all the attendants...everyone wished the session lasted longer!
